However, we cannot do this while sacrificing standards as to what is appropriate for minors. I love that this author’s intent is to provide and easy-to-read, graphic, comic book style novel that can allow teens to feel a commonality when their family is experiencing something similar. This book allows young readers to connect with a character, Rose, whose mom experienced the depression that many moms experience at the loss of an unborn baby. I didn’t want to talk to my husband and at that point nothing he said felt “right”. I didn’t want to tend to the needs of my then 1-year old. I remembered my own dark time of waking in the mornings, wanting to pull the covers over my head and just go back to sleep. As the reader, once I realized that this mom had been distant from her daughter and husband because of years of being overcome with grief, I immediately related. When I got to the sketched page where she sees the blood and knows she lost the baby, it took me back to all the feelings I experienced at that same realization. As someone who has experienced a miscarriage 12-weeks into my pregnancy, when reading “This One Summer” I sympathized and connected with the mom in this book. Each little rant or cryptic story Camille writes about has a new heading and just randomly jumps around. It just didn't feel professional to me and I sat there attempting to dissect the first page, trying to ignore the lack of capitalization and commas and whatnot.įlipping to the second page, I realized that feeling it was like a blog was right. I'm usually NOT a Grammar Nazi (or not one of the annoying ones that comment on EVERY little mistake) but it felt more like I was reading a blog or some silly comment on Yahoo News rather than an actual book. The first thing that annoyed me was the grammar on Camille's part. Then I found the first page of the book and it all fell out the window from there. And I continued loving it as I flipped through the copyright information, the acknowledgement, and the dedication. I absolutely love romantic YA stories so I figured this would be exactly what I was looking for. I loved the little blip on the dust jacket. The later tales also translated here for the first time are in the tradition of the contes cruel, and in them the influence of ether-drinking is still very much apparent. The drug certainly helped provide the feverish, nightmarish atmosphere of these wonderfully decadent and sophisticated tales, and many of the apparitions with which they are populated.īrian Stableford’s superb translations represent the first appearance in English of Jean Lorrain’s ether-inspired ‘nightmares’, originally collected as “Sensations et souvenirs” in 1895. None of Jean Lorrain’s biographers has contrived to discover exactly when or why he began taking ether, or how much of it he took before realising (too late) that it was an extremely bad idea.
